Residents of Slovakia, Poland, Germany and Austria are increasingly interested in the Czech Republic (CR). According to figures from the Institute of Tourism of the Czech Tourist Board - CzechTourism, this April they stayed in domestic hotels in similar numbers as before the covid-19 pandemic.
While 155,564 Germans visited the Czech Republic in April 2019, 135,027 Germans visited the country in the same period this year. Meanwhile, only 88 (in 2020) and 2 486 (in 2021) German guests visited the Czech Republic during the pandemic. 46 381 Slovaks came to the Czech Republic before the epidemic, 51 703 this year, only 163 in 2020 and 3 959 in 2021. The imaginary third place in the CzechTourism tables was held by people from Poland. If we compare the April results year-on-year, they visited the Czech Republic as follows: IV/2019–34 163, IV/2020–100, IV/2021–899 and IV/2022–38 488.
„Even in April this year, the majority of the total of more than 1 million people staying in domestic hotels were residents, accounting for 51.3%. Foreign visitors used 48.7% of domestic accommodation capacity, says CzechTourism Czech Tourism Centre director Jan Herget, adding. Meanwhile, the figures suggest that this summer the situation will be a little different again.“

“We expect domestic tourists to be the main driver of domestic tourism again this summer, just as they were in April. And we expect the share of foreign guests to grow even slightly. The data shows that, unlike Czechs, foreigners plan their trips here at the last minute, says David Laryš, marketing director of the PRÉVIO hotel system, adding. To give you an idea, in 2019 the share of international guests in bookings was around 35%.“

The mix of tourists coming to the country by country of origin is changing. There used to be more Russians and perhaps also more Chinese. Now, due to the coronavirus and the conflict in Ukraine, guests from Germany make up 8% of summer bookings, followed by 3% each from neighbours Poland and Slovakia, according to Prévio. Next are the Brits at 2% and 1% each from the Netherlands, Spain, Austria and Hungary.

The change in the structure of tourists is also reflected in CzechTourism's „Come experience the traditional and the new“ campaign, focusing on 14 countries according to creditworthiness. “We launched our campaign on May 12 this year, it takes place in two waves. The current one for 30 million crowns, which runs until the end of July, will be followed by an autumn wave where we expect to buy media space for 10 million crowns. The campaign will be 100% digital, i.e. advertising on social networks and the most important foreign websites, says CzechTourism Director Jan Herget, adding. Therefore, we have been working with Prague Airport on direct flights to the Czech Republic for a long time. On 22 June, the first plane of the new scheduled service from Kuwait will arrive at Prague Airport.“
