The Czech Republic's income from international tourism grew by more than CZK 17 billion year-on-year. While last year in the third quarter it was approximately CZK 18.9 billion, this year it reached about CZK 36.2 billion in the same period. The balance of the tourist industry is also positive, that means CZK 3.8 billion. This follows from the Czech Republic's balance of payments overview, which prepared the Institute of Tourism of the Czech Tourism Authority - CzechTourism, based on data from the Czech National Bank.
Tourism expenditures in the third quarter of this year were approximately CZK 32 billion, that means CZK 2 billion lower than in the same period in 2019. It includes holidays expenses of Czechs abroad. According to the Institute of Tourism, 27% of Czech people are planning this winter vacation abroad.

The balance of payments, if we compare the third quarter of 2019, 2020, 2021 and this year, was mostly in positive numbers before the covid-19 pandemic. It reached CZK 9 billion. A year later, it fell to 1.5 billion CZK, and last year it was even negative, almost -1 billion CZK.

"The development of the balance of payments in tourism and the negative balance of income and expenditure in 2021 were mainly due to the restrictions associated with the covid-19 pandemic," says Director of the Czech Tourism Authority - CzechTourism Jan Herget and adds: "The current development of income and expenses from tourism corresponds the fact that the Czech Republic still lacks foreign tourists, who tend to be more creditworthy. Compared to the pre-covid year, 25% fewer people have arrived this October. Our priority for next year, together with Prague Airport, will be direct flights to Asia, where creditworthy clients come from."

Income from international tourism includes the travel costs of foreign tourists and day-trippers. The largest amount is made up of accommodation, eating and transport.

"For domestic economy, foreign tourists are key. Therefore, the good news is that for the Christmas holidays, domestic accommodation facilities are currently almost 79% booked on average, according to DataRhymes analysis from Booking. At this time last year, there were approx. 11% fewer reservations. In Prague, hotels are currently 74% booked, apartments are even 93% booked," says Veronika Janečková, Director of the Product Management and Regional Cooperation Department.

Foreign tourists have spent an average of CZK 1,905 per person per day in Czechia in the third quarter of this year. Compared to 2019, it was CZK 200 less. For completeness: in the third quarter of 2021, travellers from abroad spent an average of CZK 1,748 in the Czech Republic, in 2020 it was a total of CZK 1,614.
