The capital of Czechia provides good value for tourists' money. The Swedes think so. They awarded Prague with imaginary gold medal in the traditional Destination of the Year survey. The domestic metropolis is considered the Weekend Destination of 2023 in the Good Value for Money Destination category. The results were announced at the largest Scandinavian B2B trade fair Travel News Market. It took place at the end of last year, in Swedish Stockholm.
The Destination of the Year project maps trends in tourism, travel moods and also the behaviour of Swedes when travelling. On the 2023 edition collaborated the biggest Swedish B2B media, Travel News and Nordic Bench.
"We are very happy about the Swedish award of Prague as the Weekend Destination of 2023. And we believe that this will also help with the return of foreign tourists to Czechia. Last November, the tourist industry was still driven by residents, with around 170,000 foreign tourists lacking. It’s necessary to work intensively on improvement and support the restart of tourism also financially, as they do elsewhere in the world," says Director of the Czech Tourism Authority - CzechTourism Jan Herget and adds: "During the covid years, the number of tourists from Sweden decreased compared to 2019 up to 80%, but the regional dispersion has increased significantly. From January to November 2022, we recorded more than 72,000 arrivals from Sweden to Czechia. It meant a year-on-year increase of 318%, yet we still haven't returned to the pre-pandemic numbers."
"We are glad that, thanks to the gradual cultivation and change of the image of the city, which we’re working hard on, Prague is getting on the top of popularity among travellers, and that it’s no different for tourists from Sweden," completes František Cipro, Chairman of the board of directors of Prague City Tourism.
Apart from Prague, the Swedes were most interested in the South Moravian, Ústí and Central Bohemian region last year. "In Sweden, our Prague has been for a long time one of the most popular weekend destinations. Last year, we therefore prepared activities to rebuild not only the capital as an attractive destination. One of the key communication topics was gastronomy," says Lucie Vallin, Director of CzechTourism's foreign representation for Scandinavia and Finland, who took the Weekend Destination of the Year 2023 award for Prague. Lucie Vallin adds: "This year we want to continue with the image campaign "Fly and Drive", for instance. Its main goal will be the sale of price tariffs and the promotion of Czechia as a safe destination with great accessibility."
The Scandinavian Travel News Market, where Czechia received the above-mentioned award, was held on November 10, 2022, in Stockholm. More than 120 exhibitors from different countries of the world presented themselves at the fair and it visited more than 1,000 tourism professionals from all over Scandinavia. In addition to the previously mentioned campaign, CzechTourism is preparing a number of events and activities for local market this year as well. From participation in the Ferie for Alle or Golfmessut fairs to a MICE fam trip, a special gastronomy event or an online campaign focused on a self-drive vacation or sustainable tourism, including travelling by train.
