HomeNew Year's Eve 2025 - Let's welcome the New Year with consideration and respect
Enjoy the end of this year with those you care about. We wish you a successful and eventful year of travelling in Czechia. At the same time, keep in mind that noisy New Year's Eve and New Year's Day celebrations have been significantly reduced in many places in Czechqia, including the capital, for some time now.
Pyrotechnics ban in Prague
Also, at the turn of 2025/2026, there is a ban on the launching of fireworks in sensitive locations in the metropolis. Although an amendment to the Pyrotechnics Act came into force on 1 December 2025, nothing major changes in practice for Prague – the city ordinance has contained most of the restrictions for several years. The ban on fireworks applies mainly to the locations listed below:
  • monument reservation in the historical centre of the metropolis (e.g. Old Town Square, Wenceslas Square)
  • watercourses and their surroundings (including islands), dams, reservoirs and weirs, within 50 metres from the shore (e.g. Náplavka)
  • healthcare facilities (hospitals, homes for the elderly and disabled, homes with special arrangements, day and weekly residential homes or day service centres) within 250 metres
  • particularly protected areas and nature parks – within 50 metres of their boundaries
  • areas ZOO Praha, veterinary emergency facilities and animal shelters, rescue stations and rescue centres within 250 metres
  • The ban also applies to the discharge of lucky lanterns, which pose a risk of fires
Detailed information, an interactive map of exactly where the ban applies, as well as additional language versions (AJ and UA) are available on the website of the City of Prague

Penalties for violation of the ordinance

Compliance with the regulation will be monitored by the Prague Municipal Police and the Police of Czechia. Violations of the rules may be costly:

  • on-the-spot fine: up to CZK 10,000
  • administrative proceedings: up to CZK 100,000
Why ban pyrotechnics?
  • protecting birds and wild and domestic animals from stress, panic and injury
  • Preventing pollution – pyrotechnics leave toxic residues in soil, water and air
  • safety for residents and visitors to Prague
Pyrotechnics don't belong in nature either
The use of fireworks is strictly prohibited in national parks and protected landscape areas. Noise and chemicals can irreversibly damage nature and stress animals, which can seriously harm themselves in a panic.

Let's think about pets too
New Year's Eve is an extremely stressful time for dogs and cats every year. Sudden bumps, flashes and noises can lead to panic reactions, escapes or injuries. This year, Prague has again prepared enlightening materials and practical advice for breeders on how to handle this period as gently as possible.

The turn of the year can be celebrated in other ways
  • take a winter trip to the mountains
  • visit a castle, chateau or museum
  • enjoy a walk through historic Prague or beautiful countryside
  • discover lesser-known places in Czechia even off the main tourist routes
  • find inspiration on our portal Way out of boredom
Let's be considerate – not only to each other, but also to our surroundings. Let us welcome the New Year with respect for people, animals and nature.
