BORDER REGION - The European Trail of Castles and Chateaux Czech-Poland is becoming one of the most important tourist products in this part of the continent. More than 80 historic buildings on both sides of the border are working closely together as part of the ongoing project "Castles and Chateaux Connect Us II". This cooperation offers travellers a unique experience and a shared story about the rich cultural heritage of Central Europe.
Dynamic development of cross-border cooperation
The project, which builds on the successful activities of 2019–2021, is now in a phase of intensive development. By expanding its scope to other regions, the route creates a coherent and comprehensive offer that currently includes:
  • In Czechia: Pardubice, Hradec Kralove and Olomouc regions.
  • In Poland: Lower Silesia and Opole Voivodeships.
Today, the European Route of Castles is not just a list of monuments, but a living network of cooperating site managers. This synergy makes a real contribution to the growth of tourism and the popularisation of lesser-known but fascinating places in the border region.

More than 80 stops on the history map
The strength of the entire route is the connection of more than 80 castles, chateaus and palaces, which together build a strong and recognizable brand. Tourists discover history in a modern way – from majestic fortresses to intimate pearls of residential architecture. The project successfully combines tradition with innovative promotion, making tangible heritage a driver of local tourism.

„Thanks to the active cooperation of more than 80 objects, the border between Czechia and Poland on this route practically ceases to exist. Tourists move seamlessly between the regions and discover that the historical heritage is very rich on both sides of the border," say the coordinators of the initiative.

„This project beautifully shows that borders are often set mainly in our heads. Travel can naturally dispel them, and that's exactly what is being done here. The Czech-Polish Trail of Castles and Chateaux is a great example of a working international cooperation with real benefits for both countries and their tourism as a whole. It is also an attractive product for visitors from distant markets. They can discover two countries in one trip through Central Europe with the feeling of one complete experience. We are happy to have been able to support this initiative and will continue to promote it,“ says Director of the Czech Tourist Authority – CzechTourism František Reismüller.

Solid foundations and support from the European Union
The realization of the project „Castles and Chateaux connect us II“ is possible thanks to significant support from European funds. These funds are continuously used to strengthen tourists' awareness of the cultural wealth of the border region.
  • Total project value: EUR 746 535,40
  • European Union (ERDF) contribution: EUR 597 228.31
  • Programme:INTERREG Czech-Poland 2021–2027
Activities carried out within the project not only increase the number of visitors, but also build a new quality of tourism based on a common European identity and mutual promotion of Czech and Polish architectural treasures. The project is implemented by the regional destination organisations: the Hradec Králové Regional Tourism Centre, the Destination Society of East Bohemia, the Tourism Centre of the Olomouc Region, the Lower Silesian Tourist Organisation (PL) and the Opole Regional Tourist Organisation (OROT).

About the project:„Castles and Chateaux connect us II“ is a project co-financed by the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund within the framework of the INTERREG Czech-Poland Cooperation Programme 2021–2027.
