HomeSummer belongs to Czechia this year. Czechs want safety, comfort and experiences
Czechs are planning to spend the summer mainly at home this year. According to a recent survey by CzechTourism, 77% of respondents are planning a summer holiday in Czechia, which represents a year-on-year increase of 12 percentage points. By contrast, interest in foreign travel is declining. Roughly half of Czechs want to go abroad this year, i.e. 8 percentage points less than last year. In addition to price and quality of services, the issue of safety and security when travelling is also increasingly influencing the decision-making process. Due to the current situation in the Middle East, almost a third of people prefer closer and safer destinations and are considering their choice of holiday destination more carefully. The trend is towards longer stays, an emphasis on quality accommodation and a combination of relaxation, nature and experiences. This is according to the latest survey by CzechTourism.

Security, availability and flexibility play an increasing role
The most common destination for summer holidays in the country has traditionally been South Bohemia (26%) and South Moravia (25%). This is followed by the Moravian-Silesian (16%) and Central Bohemian regions (15%). The average length of stay in the country this year is 11.7 days, almost three days more than last year. Czechs plan to spend an average of CZK 10,447 per person on their holidays.

It is confirmed that Czechs want to travel, but at the same time they are increasingly thinking about where they will go and how safe they will feel during their holidays. Alongside price and quality of service, the importance of accessibility, flexibility and overall security when travelling is growing. This is where Czechia has a great advantage. Moreover, people really want to stop off for a few days, relax and experience as many different activities as possible in one place. In other words – they want to enjoy their well-deserved time off to the fullest and fill it with the most of what Czechia has to offer. And they definitely have a lot to choose from," says Director of the Czech Tourist Authority – CzechTourism František Reismüller.

The current situation in the world also has a more concrete impact on holiday planning. While 73% of respondents said that the situation in the Middle East has not directly affected their travel plans, 28% of people now prefer closer and safer destinations and 27% are more cautious when choosing a holiday. A tenth of respondents have postponed their planned trip due to the crisis, 7% have changed their original destination and 4% have cancelled their holiday.

Summer in the sign of well-being, movement and shared experiences
Summer holidays this year will be all about relaxation, exercise in nature and time spent with loved ones. Around 15% of respondents want to travel with friends and 8% will travel solo.

The dominant type of holiday remains a relaxing break with lighter sporting activities, which four out of ten Czechs plan. Hiking (78%), nature walks (63%), water sports, visiting water parks or swimming (39%) and shorter bike trips (33%) are the most popular activities.

„Czechs increasingly combine active movement with relaxation, gastronomy or exploring regions. In addition to traditional hiking, shorter stays combined with wellness, city visits, cultural events or local gastronomy are becoming increasingly popular. Czechia has an exceptionally strong and varied offer in this respect,“ adds head of the Institute of Tourism of the CzechTourism agency Petr Janeček.

The younger generation is more likely to seek out more active forms of spending their holidays, such as ferrata (12%), trail rides (10%) or river rafting (18%). On the other hand, older people are more likely to seek relaxation in wellness and spas or prefer quieter stays.

What's the deciding factor when choosing a holiday this year? Price, quality and recommendations
When choosing a holiday, price (93%), the range and quality of services provided (92%) and information about accommodation on the website (91%) are the main factors. Location, nearby tourist attractions or personal experience also play an important role. More than half of the respondents (55%) are inspired by recommendations from friends and family. The younger generation is significantly more likely to use social networks, which more than half of 18 to 29 year olds follow when planning their holidays. In contrast, the over-60 generation draws inspiration from travel shows. Thematic and travel websites are one of the main sources for respondents with a university degree.

Almost half of people will travel to a new place this year that they have not visited before. The car or motorbike remains the main mode of transport (74%), with around a fifth of respondents using the train.

At the same time, Czechs are increasingly combining traditional inspiration with digital tools. When travelling, they make extensive use of mobile apps, especially Maps.cz/Maps.com or Google Maps. Frequently used applications also include Booking.com or one of the largest tourist portals operated by the CzechTourism agency, Kudy z nudy.

Accommodation remains the biggest item on summer holidays
Czechs plan to spend an average of CZK 10,447 per person on their summer holidays in Czechia, CZK 740 more than last year. Almost half of this amount (CZK 5,021) is spent on accommodation. Most often people choose guesthouses (50%) and higher category hotels with three or more stars (41%). The popularity of higher quality types of accommodation has been growing for a long time.

Transport and restaurant meals also remain an important item. However, the majority of survey participants do not plan to increase their budget significantly – 46% of respondents expect to spend similarly to last year, while around a fifth expect higher costs. 10% of respondents plan to spend less this year.

Less Czechs will go abroad this year than last year
49% of Czechs are planning a summer holiday abroad this year. The most common destinations are Italy (21%), Greece (20%), Croatia, Spain (16%) and Slovakia (15%). 1% of respondents are planning to travel to the United Arab Emirates.

The average length of a holiday abroad is 10.8 days and the average cost is CZK 22,741 per person. Of these, accommodation is the largest item (46%), followed by transport (17%) and meals in restaurants (11%). The main means of transport remains air travel (50%), followed by car or motorbike (34%). The most popular activities are light walking (62%) or hiking (60%). Hotels with three or more stars (58%) lead in accommodation. People most often go abroad with a partner (39%) or family (38%).

Respondents who will not go abroad this year most often cite lack of finances (40%) or fear of sudden changes in travel conditions (31%) as reasons.

Summer includes festivals
Festivals, concerts or cultural events remain a popular part of summer holidays, even if they are not the main reason for most Czechs to travel. A fifth of those surveyed visit them if they are held in their place of stay, and another 5% plan their holiday around a festival programme. Music festivals and concerts (60%), cultural and historical events (39%) or gastronomic festivals (33%) are the most popular, confirming that people want to combine relaxation with an atmosphere of experiential events and discovering regional culture and gastronomy during the summer.
