Czechia is celebrating significant success on the Spanish travel scene. At the Viajes National Geographic Awards 2026 ceremony in Barcelona, Markéta Lehečková, Director of the CzechTourism Foreign Representation for Spain, received the Mención especial award in the International Destinations category. According to the readers of the prestigious Viajes National Geographic magazine, Czechia is one of the most attractive places in the world. This year, Angola won the gold medal, while Czechia took home the silver medal.

The Viajes National Geographic Readers' Choice Awards are among the most prestigious travel and lifestyle awards in Spain. Each year they highlight the most interesting destinations, hotels and tourism projects at national and international level. In its fourth edition, the competition was decided by readers, the online community and the magazine's editorial specialists. This year, the organisers awarded the best projects in 14 categories, taking into account not only the attractiveness of the destinations, but also the quality of service, authenticity or emphasis on sustainability.

Success backed by long-term work
The special recognition confirms the growing popularity of Czechia on the Spanish market and the long-term work of the CzechTourism agency, which presents our country to local tourists as a modern, safe and diverse destination with a wide range of experiences.

„This award is a great pleasure for us and at the same time proof that Czechia has a very strong position in Spain. This is due, among other things, to the excellent work of our foreign representation there, which systematically strengthens the awareness of Czechia as a country full of culture, gastronomy, unique experiences and beautiful nature. A big thank you to the whole team, as well as to our partners and the media, thanks to whom we are able to reach out to new travellers," says František Reismüller, Director of the Czech Tourist Authority – CzechTourism.

Moreover, the award comes symbolically in the year when CzechTourism's foreign representation in Spain marks 25 years of operation.

„I am delighted that Czechia has received this award from the readers of the prestigious Viajes National Geographic magazine. It is a signal for us that the Spanish perceive the country as an attractive place for their future travels. They are attracted by the combination of historic cities and monuments, beautiful nature, opportunities for active recreation and increasingly interesting gastronomy. We are also very pleased that some of the votes came from people who have already visited Czechia, have personal experience of it and want to come back again," adds Markéta Lehečková.

Collaboration with Viajes National Geographic

CzechTourism has been cooperating with Viajes National Geographic magazine since the beginning of its presence on the Spanish market. Over the years, the magazine's editors have visited not only Prague, but also many other regions and places throughout Czechia. These trips have resulted in a series of reports and inspiring articles introducing Czechia to Spanish readers. Recent notable collaborations include a thematic project on traveling by car in Czechia, which the magazine published last year.

Spain as a stable market with a taste for exploring Czechia

Spain is one of the long-standing stable and strong markets. In 2025, nearly 280,000 tourists headed to domestic mass accommodation facilities, spending nearly 790,000 nights in the country and staying an average of 3.8 days. Most often they headed to Prague, where they also spend most nights. However, the Olomouc Region, Vysočina Region and Karlovy Vary Region recorded the longest stays. The trend thus confirms the growing interest in regions outside the main tourist routes.

Spaniards love food and like to try new dishes, which is why they often seek gastro experiences here too. They are one of the nations that travel for culture, attending concerts, enjoying opera, ballet or even black theatre. Promotion focused on local UNESCO sites, castles and chateaus helps to increase their interest in the country. In recent years, before and during their stay in Czechia, they are interested in our nature and the possibilities of active tourism, preferring especially hiking or cycling.

CzechTourism has long been working to strengthen the image of Czechia in Spain, for example through strategic media campaigns, cooperation with online content creators and presentations of Czech regions at specialised events. Within the framework of trade fairs such as FITUR Madrid, key negotiations are regularly held with major tour operators and travel agencies, which have the potential to bring thousands more visitors from the country to Czechia.
