Czechia is becoming an increasingly popular destination, especially for foreign visitors. Last year, 22.8 million guests came to domestic hotels, guesthouses and other mass accommodation facilities and spent 57.3 million nights there. A total of 54% (12.3 million) were domestic tourists, while 46% (10.5 million) were foreign visitors. The average length of stay was 3.5 days.
Interest in Czechia from foreign tourists
During the last year, Czechia was most often chosen as a holiday destination by travellers from neighbouring countries, mainly Germans (2 377 682, year-on-year + 4.1%), Slovaks (899 174, year-on-year + 4.5%) and Poles (841 541, year-on-year + 10.8%). The “jumpers of the year” can then be identified as citizens of China (173 814, +94% yoy) and Israel (191 168, +63% yoy). Visitors from Iceland, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Japan and Taiwan also saw increases in the tens of percentages. Tourists most often headed to Prague, South Moravia and South Bohemia regions. The longest stays were in the Karlovarský (4.7 days) and Královehradecký regions (4 days).
“Last year showed that Czechia is one of the most desirable destinations. In terms of the number of arrivals, we have reached the highest ever figures since 2012. Year-on-year, the number of foreigners increased by almost 10%, while as far as domestic travellers are concerned, we are at about the same level. And that's great news for domestic tourism. It is also positive that the number of tourists is growing across Czechia. Last year, we recorded an increase in a total of ten regions, with the largest increases in Prague, South Bohemia, Central Bohemia and Karlovy Vary. It turns out that it is possible to gradually dilute the interest of visitors who are discovering even the lesser-known beauties of our country,“ sums up Director of the Czech Tourist Authority – CzechTourism František Reismüller and adds: “As part of our campaigns this year, we will continue to promote Czechia as a destination that offers a range of extraordinary experiences for active tourism enthusiasts, spa lovers, lovers of fine gastronomy or anyone who wants to travel sustainably. And all this in an environment that is safe, as confirmed by the long-term Global Peace Index, according to which the Czech Republic regularly ranks among the safest countries in the world. In 2024, we ranked 12th. This steadily high ranking increases the attractiveness of Czechia not only for individual travellers, but also for the MICE segment, where security plays an important role in the decision-making of congress and incentive event organisers.“
Growth across the country even in the last quarter of 2024
Looking purely at Q4 2024 - total arrivals to mass accommodation increased by 7.1 % year-on-year and overnight stays increased by 7 %. The number of domestic (2.4 million) and foreign (2.6 million) guests increased. In total, nearly 5 million visitors came to Czechia and spent almost 11.7 million nights, staying an average of 3.3 days. All regions except Moravian-Silesian and Olomouc recorded a year-on-year increase in arrivals in this period. The largest were Kralovehradecky (+11.2%) and South Bohemia (+10.7%).
