HomeTourism gains momentum, interest in hotels rises
After the coronavirus pandemic, people started to travel more. According to the tables on tourdata.cz, which are based on data published today by the Czech Statistical Office, 2.8 million guests came to domestic hotels in the first quarter of this year. Last year, it was only about 280,000. Residents predominated, with about 2 million of them. From abroad, the Czech Republic (CR) was mostly visited by people from neighbouring countries.
The largest number of visitors to the Czech Republic in the first quarter of 2022 came from Germany (234 thousand), followed by Slovakia (98 thousand) and Poland (79 thousand). Some regions recorded stronger domestic tourism. This is the case, for example, in Prague. This year, in Q1, it recorded more than 267 thousand resident guests, a higher figure, taking the last ten years, was only in 2019, when it was about 277 thousand of these guests.

„The positive news is the great interest of domestic tourists in holidays in the Czech Republic. Compared to the first quarter before the pandemic, it is only a 3% drop,“ saysDirector of the Czech Tourism Centre – CzechTourism Jan Herget and adds:„There is a huge drop in foreign guests, where tourists from Asia and Russia are particularly lacking. So it is absolutely clear that we need to let the world know that the Czech Republic is ready for tourists.“

In the first three months of this year, the capital city of Prague alone received 60% fewer foreign visitors compared to the pre-Christmas year of 2019. This was similar to the Karlovy Vary region, which saw a 49% decline in foreign guests in 2019/2022.

„It's not just the overseas campaign with the subtitle „Come experience the traditional and the new“ that should help with the change. We are launching it tomorrow in 14 countries around the world, says Jan Herget, director of the Czech Tourism Centre – CzechTourism, adding. We believe that thanks to these activities, there will soon be an increase in arrivals to the Czech Republic from neighbouring and nearby countries, and that the hotels in the regions will be used even more by residents. “

The war in Ukraine has had a negative impact on tourism, including arrivals to the Czech Republic. Approximately 8.7 thousand guests from Russia stayed in domestic hotels in Q1 this year, while in total more than 887 thousand non-residents stayed in these mass accommodation facilities in the Czech Republic in the given period. Prior to the covid in 2019, Russian visitors to hotels numbered almost 130 thousand out of a total of more than 2 million non-residents. The numbers in terms of guests from Ukraine did not change that much, this year there were about 47 thousand, in 2019 it was less than 50 thousand.

Domestic guests in this year's first quarter mostly visited the Hradec Králové Region (282 thousand), the capital city of Prague (267 thousand) and the Liberec Region (203 thousand). In the Liberec region, domestic arrivals are even the highest since 2012. The situation was similar in the Hradec Králové Region. Foreign guests in January, February and March 2022 mostly visited the capital city of Prague (492 thousand), the Karlovy Vary Region (76 thousand) and the Hradec Kralove Region (63 thousand).
